Trying to choose a dishwasher? Check out these pointers before making your selection:

• Slim-line, full-size or compact model? Which is right for you will depend on a compromise between how much space you have in the kitchen and how many mouths you typically feed. Models will tell you how many settings they can wash in one go.
• Consider both your bank balance and the environment and try to choose a model with a good energy rating. All models give the stats so take a look.
• What wash options does it have? For example having the option to delay the start can be very handy so you don't have to let it wash as soon as you've put the dishes in.
• Controls tend to be in one of two places, and you may have a preference. Most commonly they are in full view on the front, but some models have them hidden along the top of the door.
• Does it include a child safety lock? Some models include this feature which adds piece of mind if you have little ones running around.
• The options for rearranging the internal layout might be a deciding factor. On some models you can move racks and / or baskets around to vary the usability of the space.
• The time it takes for the machine to actually complete it's task is another feature that you clearly want to check on.
